A Soldier’s Farewell: The Final Salute

Here at the graveside, where the committal is held, lay the honorable remains in a flag-draped casket.  The blue stars are placed over the left shoulder, over the heart; for it is with our heart that we pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America. The soldiers approaching in a measured gait, take hold of the corners of the flag. Raising the flag, it hovers over the casket like the boundless spirit of a widespread eagle as the sound of the bugle is heard echoing through the wind.  Hands are placed solemnly and respectfully over left breasts.  A tear is shed from a mother, for it has been through her faith, love, loyalty and devotion that the character of her child has made this country great; a father stands proud with honor, for he has given his child for the defense of our country.

Soldier, as this flag is folded, may we remember with each fold your loved honorable duty to the Armed Forces of the United States that protected our country and our flag against her enemies, giving a portion of your life for the defense of our country to attain peace throughout the world.  With each step and each fold, representing your walk through the valley of the shadow of death and our weaker nature, for as American citizens trusting in God, it is to Him we turn for His divine guidance. “In God We Trust” heal our hearts as the stars of the folded flag lay in the hands of your family. With honor today, we offer a final salute as your honorable soul lay at rest.

Farewell Soldier, farewell.
